IMPROVING STUDENT UNDERSTANDING OF ANIMAL RESPIRATORY SYSTEMS THROUGH COLLABORATIVE DISCUSSION AND VISUAL MEDIA

Abstract

Abstract: This research is motivated by the less than optimal learning outcomes of students in Natural Science (IPA) on the material of recognizing respiratory organs and their functions in animals. This study aims to improve student motivation, understanding, and learning outcomes through collaborative discussion methods and the use of visual media (pictures). This study is a Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted in class V of SDN 264/VI Bukit Bungkul II with 16 students as research subjects. The research procedure was carried out in two cycles, each of which consisted of four main stages: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. Data collection was carried out through written learning outcome tests and observation sheets of teacher and student activities. The results showed a significant increase in learning outcomes in each cycle. In cycle 1, the average class score reached 73.75 with a classical completion percentage of 62.5% (10 students completed). After corrective actions were carried out in cycle 2, the average student score increased to 88.12 with a completion percentage reaching 100% (all 16 students completed). Thus, there was an average increase in learning outcomes of 14.37% from cycle 1 to cycle 2. The conclusion of this study is that the application of the discussion method assisted by image media has proven effective in improving the learning process and increasing the understanding of fifth grade students on the material on the respiratory organs of living things..
